Surge in number of children admitted to hospital with eating disorders

The proportion of children and young people admitted to hospital with an eating disorder has increased by 90 per cent over the last five years, according to analysis by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Between 2015/16 and 2020/21, hospital admissions for children and young people aged 18 and under increased from 3,541 episodes to 6,713.

This marks a 35.4 per cent increase in the last year alone, according to the analysis of NHS data.

Hospital admissions among boys and young men saw the biggest increase of 128 per cent, from 280 hospital admissions in 2015/16 to 637 in 2020/2021.  

The Royal College of Psychiatrists has released new guidance for frontline staff on medical emergencies in eating disorders across both children and adults “so that people with eating disorders needing urgent care can be identified and treated earlier”.
