The figures, released by the inspectorate following a parliamentary question from Steve Brine, conservative MP for Winchester and Chandler’s Ford, showed that between September and December 2019, an average of 735 nurseries, pre-schools and childminders closed every month, a 33 per cent increase in closures compared to the same period in 2018.
The sharp increase was driven by a rise in the number of childminders forced to close, the figures show.
Between September and December 2019, 543 childminders closed compared with 390 in the same period the previous year.
In the final quarter of 2019, 192 pre-schools and nurseries closed compared with 164 during the same period in 2018.
