North Devon Surf Therapy will use the National Lottery Community Fund (NLCF) two year funding award to expand its services to reach young people who are at risk of disengaging from school due to mental health challenges.

Classes for older people, another at risk group of loneliness, are also to be run by the Westward Ho based surf school.

The aim of therapy is to help people learn to surf, improve their fitness as well as “strengthen relationships across generations”.

North Devon schools are to work with the initiative to recruit young people to take part.

“This funding will make such a huge difference – it is so rewarding for us to see the positive impact surfing makes to people’s lives,” said North Devon Surf Therapy director Michelle Harding.
