Support children and young people throughout care journey, academics urge

More than two thirds of care leavers suffered mental health issues while at university, a new report finds, as researchers call for accelerated support during all stages of care.

In a new report Pathways to University - The Journey Through Care, academics from the University of Sheffield are calling for action from the government and policymakers to accelerate support and promote achievement for those with care experience. 

The report, based on the experiences of 234 care experienced students at 29 universities, asked care leavers about all aspects of their care journey.

Some 68 per cent said they had experienced mental health problems while at university while others shared details of such issues earlier in their care journey.

“Several reported that carers and professionals were uninformed about mental health and sometimes failed to provide adequate support,” the report states.
