
From July 2021 to September’s inspection, Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission found that children spent on average 19 hours a day locked in their cells. On some days this is increased to 23 hours.
Inspectors note that children may be locked up for even longer, after raising further concerns around the recording of data at the G4S run facility.
A raft of further criticisms are raised by inspectors, who say “children’s day-to-day experiences are very poor”.
Children told the inspection team of “chaotic arrangements and general disorganisation at the centre”.
Often children did not know what was happening each day or “from one day to the next”, inspectors add.
