Youth offending work in Southend has been lauded by inspectors for delivering results despite a service restructure and budget cuts.

Inspectors from the Probation Inspectorate found a number of examples of good work, with the service receiving high scores in safeguarding, public protection and minimising the risk of harm.

Of a selection of cases analysed, referrals relating to safeguarding issues had been made to appropriate agencies in 13 of 14 relevant cases in the community.

Evidence of active engagement with the child or young person in initial assessments was found in all cases.

However reviews of interventions following a significant change in the circumstances of a young offender had been undertaken in only two out of the four custody cases analysed and four out of ten community cases.
