Social workers criticise 'misleading' regulation of directors

1 min read Education Social Care
Directors of children's services from an education background should not have responsibility for child social care, according to the British Association of Social Workers.

In its response to a government consultation on the role of the director of children's services, the association has also called for an end to the "unacceptable" and "misleading" situation where directors of children's services from different backgrounds are subject to different regulations.

It says that social workers are subject to the General Social Care Council, and can in extreme cases be struck off. "We think the current situation is misleading to members of the public who may believe that a director of children's services is a qualified social worker and registered with the General Social Care Council," it adds.

The association also argues against guidance in the consultation that cautions local authorities against merging adult and children's social services. It says it is essential that a director of children's services should have knowledge of adult services, whereas a director of children's services charged with responsibility for universal education services and targeted social care services is at risk of "focusing too heavily on services for the vast majority".
