
The independent body, which currently sits under the Department for Education, will advise Liz Truss, minister for women and equalities.
It will also work closely with other equality bodies covering race, disability and gender, a statement said.
It will continue to help inform policies to support regions most affected by the pandemic including areas in the north east and north west, but also other social mobility coldspots in the south.
The commission, co-chaired by Steven Cooper and Sandra Wallace, which currently sits within the Department for Education has long argued that it should have a more prominent place at the heart of Whitehall.
