Shoesmith wins appeal against sacking

Sharon Shoesmith has won her appeal over her sacking following the Baby P tragedy.

Court of Appeal judges upheld Shoesmith's challenge against a previous High Court ruling that former children's secretary Ed Balls and Haringey Council acted lawfully.

Her appeal against regulator Ofsted was dismissed.

Speaking outside court today, Shoesmith, who was sacked as director of children's services at Haringey Council in December 2008, said she was "relieved" to have won her case.

"I have spent a life time protecting, caring and educating children and my sorrow at the death of Peter Connelly in Haringey while I was director is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life," she said.

"But, as the judges have said, making a public sacrifice of an individual would not prevent further tragedies.
