Sex offenders to gain right to be removed from register under proposals

Sex offenders will be able to apply to be removed from the sex offenders register under Home Office proposals announced today (14 June).

The draft order proposes that sex offenders who are currently required to register with the police for life will have to wait 15 years after release before they can apply to be removed from the register. Child sex offenders will have to wait eight years.

The proposals come after a Supreme Court ruling in February that criminals should be able to argue a case for removal by claiming they are no longer a risk to the public.

James Brokenshire, minister for crime and security, said strict rules would be put in place for considering whether sex offenders should be removed from the register.
