Services must protect older children to prevent sexual exploitation

Child protection services must place a greater emphasis on safeguarding older children, experts have warned, following the jailing of nine men convicted of sexual exploitation in Rochdale.

The men from Rochdale and Oldham were found guilty of offences including rape and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with girls as young as 13.

The Office of the Children’s Commissioner is conducting an inquiry into child sexual exploitation, which was due to publish an interim report in the autumn. But following the convictions, Education Secretary Michael Gove has asked deputy commissioner Sue Berelowitz to accelerate the inqury and provide an early report in one month, which will include recommendations on how to keep children in care homes safe from this form of abuse.

Hilton Dawson, chief executive of the British Association of Social Workers (BASW), said the case highlighted the need for child protection services to broaden their focus beyond the needs of young children.
