'Serious shortage' of secure children’s home places concerns Ofsted

Ofsted has raised concerns over a “serious shortage” of placements in secure children’s homes.

In its annual report, published earlier this week, the inspectorate said that at any one time, around 25 children are waiting for a secure children’s home place and around 20 are placed by English local authorities in Scottish secure units due to the lack of available places in England.

Responding to the report, Ofsted’s national director of regulation and social care, said: “We are really worried about the very tight supply of residential care places in the right regions for the right children and we’re particularly worried about children in need of specialist provision as welfare justice places can be very tight.”
