Security risks of children's database "impossible to eradicate"

The government has pledged to address security problems highlighted in an independent review of the controversial ContactPoint database.

Consultants Deloitte and Touche's report called for further security controls to be added to the £224m database of children’s details to stop inappropriate access by administration staff.

The report also said it may be impossible to completely eradicate all security risks.

Tougher measures promised by junior children's minister Kevin Brennan include enhanced criminal records bureau checks on all those with access, an audit trail of access and prosecutions brought against those misusing the system.

Terri Dowty, Action on Rights for Children director, said she was not surprised Deloitte found ContactPoint to be “inherently insecure”.

Lib Dem children’s spokeperson Annette Brooke has called for the scheme to be scrapped and Conservative shadow families minister Maria Miller condemned the government for only publishing the executive summary of Deloitte’s findings, rather than the full report.
