
As part of government plans to drive down reoffending rates a secure college that can hold up to 320 young offenders is set to open in Leicestershire in 2017.
Initial proposals revealed that the so-called “fortified school” would hold 12- to 17-year-olds, but did not say whether this would include girls.
As recently as March, the Youth Justice Board said a final decision on whether girls would be held there had not been taken.
But a report by members of the Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR), published yesterday, reveals that, after being questioned on the issue, the government “intends secure colleges to accommodate both boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 17”.
