Sector urges Cameron to improve youth services offer

1 min read Youth Work
Prime Minister David Cameron has been told to improve youth services and ensure any new laws passed by government adhere to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), by a group of youth sector organisations.

In an open letter signed by senior representatives of 12 youth organisations, including the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services, the National Youth Agency, Ambition, Children England, and the Scout Association, Cameron was told the government is not doing enough on youth services.

“We welcome your support for the Step Up to Serve campaign, your ambitions to grow the National Citizen service and recent investment in character education, but these commitments are not enough to enable all young people to be the best that they possibly can be,” the letter states.

“We need a comprehensive youth support offer that provides educational opportunities outside the classroom, support for young people with particular needs as well as opportunities for social action.”

The letter stresses that children's rights should be adhered to as the government pursues its legislative programme.
