Sector split over Family Justice Review proposals

The British Association of Social Workers (BASW) has condemned proposals to impose a six-month time limit on public care cases and reduce the use of expert independent social work witnesses in courts.

Nushra Mansuri, professional officer at British Association of Social Workers, argued that the recommendations from the final report of the Family Justice Review are motivated by a desire to cut costs.

"Allowing budgetary issues to dictate what happens in cases involving vulnerable children is risky and unacceptable," she said.

"We oppose this tokenistic target setting in the current climate of austerity and cuts. It is just not realistic, and will only ever be feasible when social workers are given the right level of resources they need to do their jobs."

She added that the review recommendations, coupled with planned cuts to legal aid, will demoralise "beleaguered frontline social workers who are toiling around the clock to deal with increased caseloads".
