Second London youth zone gets green light

A London council has given the go-ahead for a state-of-the-art youth zone to be built, the second to be earmarked for the capital in the space of two months.

Barnet Council voted unanimously in favour of proceeding with the proposed £6m youth facility which will be open seven days a week for young people aged between eight and 19, or up to 25 for those with a disability.

The centre is expected to open towards the end of 2018.

It represents the second youth zone to be given the go-ahead in London this year. The first was announced by Barking and Dagenham Council in July.

National charity OnSide, which works alongside local authorities and businesses to raise cash to establish the youth zones, has said its aim is to open five youth zones in London in the next five years.

Daniel Thomas, deputy leader of Barnet Council said: “This exciting new youth facility will offer young people a fantastic opportunity to take part in a range of activities that will complement the services we already provide.”

Kathryn Morley, chief executive of OnSide Youth Zones, added: “The vision and commitment of Barnet Council to invest in a project like this, which I know will go on to deliver for its young people for years to come, is incredibly overwhelming.

“The substantial support OnSide is receiving from local authorities such as Barnet, alongside the private sector and several charitable trusts and grants, will ensure that many more young people benefit from safe and inspiring places to go in their leisure time.”

OnSide has so far established eight youth zones in the North of England and the Midlands since 2008, and has plans in place to create another 12 by 2020.
