Scouts call for employers to encourage volunteering

Youth Work
The Scout Association is calling on employers and the government to do more to promote volunteering among workers.

The association says that youth groups and charities such as the Scouts as well as workers benefit from the experience.

But according to research by the Scouts, many of those already volunteering said their employers failed to see the value of their work outside of the office.

Only half of those surveyed said their employer had responded positively to their involvement. Securing time off work was highlighted as one of the main barriers facing volunteers.

The Scouts Association has praised those firms that promote volunteering. Aviva, for example, gives its employees 21 hours volunteering leave a year.

The Scout Association's UK chief commissioner Wayne Bulpitt said: "Enabling staff to volunteer is a cost-effective way of teaching a wide variety of skills which will be beneficial to businesses."
