Children 1st wants alcohol policy to focus on parents by encouraging them to consider the impact of drinking upon their children, rather than on young people’s drinking or the justice and health consequences of alcohol misuse.
The call coincides with the launch of the Scottish government's Alcohol Awareness Week. According to Scottish Executive figures from 2003, between 80,000 and 100,000 children are affected by parental alcohol misuse in Scotland.
"Scotland's problem with alcohol is negatively impacting far too many of our children," said Alison Todd, director of children and family services at Children 1st. "We know that at least 80,000 children in Scotland are affected by their parents' harmful drinking, very often putting their happiness, safety and welfare at risk."
