Schools minister stresses DfE commitment to EHE register

Schools minister Nick Gibb has confirmed that the Department for Education is “committed” to creating an elective home education (EHE) register, but MPs hit back saying his words “lacked urgency”.

Gibb came under fire for the DfE’s lack of urgent action in creating a register of children not in school during an education select committee meeting yesterday (27 July), where he was quizzed by MPs about rates of persistent absence in schools.

He told MPs that the DfE is still “committed” to creating a register of children who are not attending standard education settings.

He added: “We just don’t have the legislative vehicle to introduce it.”

Gibb stressed it is important to know where children who are not attending school are and why they have been taken out of education.
