Children Now has learned that ministers have ordered a "deep dive" toget a clearer picture of how the boards are working on the ground. Theexercise will allow ministers to pounce on any problems and could leadto an overhaul of the boards, many of which were only set up thisyear.
A spokeswoman for the DfES confirmed the exercise was taking place butinsisted its main purpose was to gather good practice. She said: "Theboards are performing a vital and valuable task. We are keen to seewhat's working well and to identify good practice that could beshared."
The spokeswoman would not say which boards were being targeted butrevealed "the review team are talking to a wide range of partnersincluding several local authorities".
