The call is part of the Government's response to a damning Ofsted reportissued this week, which exposes serious weakness in education services'child protection work.
The report warns that the failure of schools and councils to keeprecords of Criminal Records Bureau and List 99 checks shows the sectoris not taking child protection seriously enough.
Ofsted found that although checks were being carried out when staff werehired, 55 out of the 58 schools surveyed failed to keep a record ofthese checks once the employee was in place. Without these records, itis impossible to spot where and when checks need updating. This means amember of staff who commits an offence can go undetected. Many schoolsalso failed to revise their procedures to cover extended services. Athird had accepted agency supply staff on trust.
