Royal College of Midwives warns of 'potentially disastrous' NHS reforms

1 min read Health
The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) is among the signatories of an open letter warning of the "potentially disastrous" consequences of radical reforms of the health service.

Along with unions Unite and Unison and other professional bodies including the Royal College of Nursing, RCM has called on the government to heed warnings about key aspects of proposals on NHS reform.

Fears that increasing competition between services will hamper the effectiveness of multidisciplinary teams are strongly voiced in the letter to The Times.

"Enforced competition will also make it harder for NHS staff to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, across organisational boundaries, to create the integrated care pathways that patients want and need.

"Furthermore, the sheer scale of the ambitious and costly reform programme, and the pace of change, while at the same time being expected to make £20bn of savings, is extremely risky and potentially disastrous."
