Rolling criminal record checks planned for children's workforce

Organisations will be able to carry out rolling criminal record checks on employees working with children under plans currently being drawn up.

The new system will allow councils, charities and other bodies to be made aware if staff commit an offence that makes them unsuitable to work with children or vulnerable adults.

The head of the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB), Adele Townsend, said it is not clear how the system will work but it should be in place by the end of the year.

Details of the new system come as the CRB launches a new electronic application system to its largest customers.

Organisations making more than 3,000 checks a year can now use the e-Bulk system to send multiple applications and receive the results electronically.
