Rise in child race hate crimes

2 mins read Social Care
Race hate crimes against children reached a three-year high last year with an average of 29 offences a day being recorded against victims, some of whom were babies and toddlers, a study has found.

The investigation by the NSPCC found figures for recorded race hate against children had risen by more than a fifth over a three-year period from 8,683 in 2015/16 to 10,571 offences in 2017/18.

The charity sent Freedom of Information requests to every police force in the UK - of which 38 of the 43 forces in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland responded - asking for the total number of offences recorded as a race hate crime from 2015 to 2018 where the victim is under 18.

Among the findings were offences recorded against toddlers and babies that had yet to reach their first birthday, the NSPCC said.
