Family lawyers have asked the government not to enact the measures contained in the Children, Schools and Families Act, claiming they did not receive sufficient scrutiny by MPs.
Since 2009, journalists have been allowed to report on the process of family cases, but provisions in the act will extend this to allow the media to report details of individual cases.
The first phase of the act means most details will be able to be reported unless restricted by a judge, although identities and sensitive personal information can only be reported if the judge gives permission. The media will be able to name expert witnesses paid for giving evidence.
