Review launched to tackle 'fluffy' teaching standards

1 min read Careers Education
The government has launched a review of teaching standards to put a greater emphasis on skills to combat bad behaviour and supporting low-achieving pupils.

Education Secretary Michael Gove believes the current standards are too vague and have too little a focus on improving teachers’ skills.

The review also aims to have a clearer focus on the importance of improving grades in English and maths.

According to a 2010 survey by the General Teaching Council for England (GTC) and the National Foundation for Educational Research, two out of five teachers believe the current standards make no difference to they way they teach.

A third said the current standards also failed to provide a good definition of competence.

An example the government gives of the "woolly aspirations" of the current standards is that an experienced teacher must "contribute significantly, where appropriate, to implementing workplace policies and practice and to promoting collective responsibility for their implementation".
