The national register of career development professionals will lay down principles of professional practice for careers information, advice and guidance.
From September, schools will take on responsibility for securing careers advice for pupils. The register is intended to support schools and other organisations planning to commission careers advisers, by providing a list of approved and registered professionals.
Ruth Spellman, chair of the Careers Profession Alliance, said: “With a free marketplace opening up in career development it is essential that anyone seeking careers services can be assured they are dealing with someone who is professionally qualified and meets high standards.
“Career development is a skilled profession requiring a blend of knowledge and skills. People need to be confident that they are receiving accurate information and the very best guidance.”
