Redbridge children centres overhaul threatens jobs

1 min read Early Years
Up to 30 full-time posts could be cut from Redbridge's children's centres under plans to reorganise provision.

A Redbridge Council report reveals that the authority is considering plans to reorganise its 17 children’s centres into a “hub and spoke” model in a bid to save £605,000 from the service’s £3.8m budget during 2015/16.

The proposed spending reduction comes less than a year after the authority agreed to cut £440,000 from the service during 2014/15 and brings the total savings to more than £1m.

Under the plans, Redbridge Council will retain all 17 centres, plus two council-funded school-led centres, however, they will be reorganised into eight hub and 11 spoke centres.

According to the council report, the hubs will be “fully functioning” children’s centres and will continue with their existing provision, while the spoke centres will provide more targeted support and will deliver services and activities based on local need.
