An annual workforce survey conducted by the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) found that half of nurseries struggle to find good candidates with the right experience and qualifications.
One in three respondents cited low pay as a reason for the lack of suitable candidates.
The survey, which received 424 responses covering 7,400 practitioners and more than 1,000 support staff, found that 43 per cent of nurseries are unable to recruit any apprentices.
The drop in apprentices entering childcare is as much as 60 per cent in some areas, with respondents saying this was mainly due to employers being unable to find apprentices with the required level of qualifications as well as the right enthusiasm for working with young children.
