Poverty group attacks benefit changes

Child poverty campaigners have warned that government plans to reduce the number of people claiming benefit put children's well-being at risk.

The Department for Work and Pensions has unveiled a new medical test that will assess a person’s ability to work. The department claims it is more accurate and fairer than existing tests.

But the Child Poverty Action Group is concerned the change will cause families to lose out.

Paula Twigg, head of the citizens rights office at the charity, said: “It is of great concern that even sick and disabled people who pass the new qualifying tests may lose vital family income from benefit sanctions.”
