Possibility of Labour-Lib Dem pact grows as Brown announces his intention to resign

The prospect of children's policy being shaped by a Labour and Liberal Democrat coalition government has been boosted following Gordon Brown's declaration that he intends to stand down as leader of the Labour Party.

Brown, who has been Prime Minister since 2007, said Britain's best interests would be served by a coalition between the Lib Dems and Labour, and announced the intention for his successor to be in place by the time of the next Labour Party Conference in September.
