Police to be handed names of children's care homes

1 min read Social Care
Ofsted will be allowed to provide the names and addresses of children's homes to the police under government proposals designed to protect young people in residential care from abuse.

Ofsted already shares the names and addresses of children’s homes with local authorities on a monthly basis, but the current rules do not allow this register to be handed to the police.

The plans, outlined in a Department for Education consultation, are intended to allow local polices forces to protect the welfare of children living in care homes in their area, prevent offenders targeting children living in residential care and help police to protect children who go missing.

Children’s minister Edward Timpson said the plans would allow the police, local authorities and Ofsted to work in a “smarter” way to tackle the “ever-changing challenge of protecting our most vulnerable children”.
