
Wandsworth Council is the first authority to initiate eviction proceedings against the family of an 18-year-old accused of involvement in the public disorder and looting that took place in Clapham Junction.
Balbir Chatrik, director of policy and participation at Centrepoint, told CYP Now that taking homes from the most marginalised in society would just exacerbate the problems already facing communities.
"Young people need support, guidance and inspiration to put them on a positive path," she explained. "Instead, eviction will see them uprooted from their communities and any stability they may have had, as well costing the taxpayer.
"Crimes like those seen in the riots can never be condoned, but putting families at risk of homelessness, including children and young people who may have played no part in the riots, is not going to fix what’s referred to as broken Britain."
