Plan to extend funded childcare to more families without access to benefits

Access to funded childcare for two-year-olds could be extended to disadvantaged families who do not qualify for government benefits because of their immigration status.

The Department for Education’s response to an eight-week consultation, which closed in May, on extending childcare places to families with no recourse to public funds (NRPF) states that: “It remains our intention to extend eligibility to disadvantaged children in all types of NRPF households.”

Currently, only certain groups of people with NRPF are able to access funded childcare for two-year-olds including Zambrano carers who are required to live in the UK to care for a British child and adults and children supported under Article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights and section 4 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.
