'Pioneering' children's services partnership given green light

A private firm has been signed up to improve children's services at Sandwell Council over the next two-and-a-half years, in what is though to be the first initiative of its kind.

Sandwell Council rubberstamped the £1.15m deal with private company Impower this week in a bid to improve services.

The authority's safeguarding services were rated “adequate” by Ofsted in February, after having turned around provision following an inadequate rating and an improvement notice from government in November 2009.

Under the terms of the contract, Impower will work alongside service users, frontline staff and senior managers, and will provide an interim director of children's services to the council – current director at Suffolk County Council, Simon White.

The firm has previously worked with authorities including Coventry, Nottinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Barnet and Lewisham on individual projects.
