Peer accuses incoming commissioner of ‘pussyfooting' around government

The incoming children's commissioner for England has been accused of "pussyfooting" around government after suggesting the coalition has made good progress on children's rights over the past five years.

Anne Longfield, who takes over from current children’s commissioner Maggie Atkinson next month, told the joint committee on human rights that the 2010 commitment by the government to give due consideration to United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) has resulted in progress in a number of areas.

She said there are “really good examples” of where improvements in practice have taken place.

“There’s a lot of will in several [government] departments,” said Longfield, who was selected for the post by Education Secretary Nicky Morgan last November.

“In the Department for Education there’s lots of will, and a fair degree of awareness across the piece in terms of what this means and responsibilities.”
