Parents are more concerned that their children will abuse drugs and alcohol than be involved in a serious accident, research by parenting advice website Parentchannel has revealed.

The top concern for parents regarding their children is drug and alcohol abuse, which was highlighted by 57 per cent of respondents. In comparison, 54 per cent said they had fears about their children being involved in a serious accident.

Other concerns were their children’s financial stability and body-image pressures. Underage pregnancy was highlighted as a fear by a third of those surveyed.

Children aged between 12 and 15 also took part in the survey. ??When asked what issues they were most likely to lie to their parents about, drug and alcohol use was the top rated answer.

Their biggest concern was sexuality, followed by being involved in an accident, failing at school and being arrested.
