When he discovered my area of work, he talked with emotion and gratitude about the significance of his Scout leader during his teenage years. He had apparently been something of a father figure but also an encourager of risk, a moral guardian and guide, a motivator and a role model.
Having had such a positive experience, the businessman had resolved to give something back by becoming a Scout leader himself. This he had done for some years, until a young family and the pressures of work brought about his decision, with some regret, to give it up. He felt at the time that, as he put it, he couldn't do sufficient justice to such a demanding and difficult role.
