Osborne unveils first youth groups to get social action funding

The first tranche of uniformed youth groups to receive a share of a £10m fund has been announced by the government.

Chancellor George Osborne has named 14 organisations, including Girlguiding, St John Ambulance and Volunteer Police Cadets, as beneficiaries of the Uniformed Youth Social Action Fund.

The aim of the fund, which uses money taken from banks through Libor funds, is
to support organisations belonging to the Youth United Network to organise and deliver social action programmes to young people.

The successful organisations will use the funding to increase the number of places available for young people to join uniformed youth groups by 15,000.

Osborne first announced the fund during the Budget in March.

Announcing the successful bidders, Osborne said: “I am delighted that we are using Libor fines to improve the lives of thousands of young people by supporting these good causes.

“It is right that money paid in fines by people who demonstrated the worst of the values in our society is now being used to support those who demonstrate the very best and bring about positive change.”

Rosie Thomas, director of the Youth United Foundation, the charity that supports the Youth United Network, said she was pleased the funding would be going to groups that carry out grassroots social action and have a track record of unlocking potential in young people.

She added: “These grants will enable them to attract more young members, particularly in deprived areas, who in turn benefit from the experiences, skills and confidence they gain as part of a uniformed group.”

A second round of funding is to be announced later in the year.
