In May this year, the Children and Family Courts Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass) recorded 43,371 open or ongoing cases compared with 34,622 open or ongoing cases in May last year.

Cafcass said this is due to “continued high new case demand”.

“Overall caseloads have continued to increase, impacted by the slower family justice system case completion rate due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” a spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Cafcass received 4,912 new cases in May 2021, 142 more cases than in May last year and 43 fewer cases than in April 2021.
