According to a report by End Child Poverty, 4.2 million children were living in poverty in 2021/22 – an increase of 600,000 on the previous year – and the equivalent of 29 per cent of children living in the UK.

It found that 71 per cent of children who were in poverty after housing costs, and 67 per cent of those who were in poverty before housing costs, were in a family where at least one adult was working.

The North East has the highest level of in-work poverty, with 67 per cent of children in poverty in working families before housing costs.
