Olympian spearheads event to improve care system

Former Olympic athlete Fatima Whitbread has spoken about her drive to “bring people together” to improve the “broken” care system.

The former world javelin champion and two-time Olympic medallist is heading up a two-day summit to provide a platform for policymakers, practitioners, campaigners and philanthropists to discuss key challenges facing the care system and develop solutions to them.

Speaking to CYP Now, Whitbread, who spent the first 14 years of her life in care, said the care system is currently failing too many children and needs major reform to raise aspirations for care-experienced young people.

“When you look at it, the care system is…setting them up for failure rather than success,” she said.
