Ofsted refutes Care Review’s claim over ‘unnecessary' child protection investigations

Ofsted inspectors do not support the view put forward in the Care Review’s Case for Change report that local authorities are carrying out unnecessary child protection investigations, the inspectorate has said.

The report, published by Care Review chair Josh MacAlister in June, states that “when the state steps in, too often the focus is on assessment and investigation not support”.

It describes the children’s social care system in England as “bureaucratic and risk averse”.

However, in its response to a public consultation on the report, which closed on 13 August, Ofsted’s director of regulation and social care Yvette Stanley says: “Generally, we are more likely to report that a local authority is too slow to take decisive action when children may be at serious risk of harm.”
