Ofsted praises turnaround in care leaver services in Sunderland

Efforts to improve the quality of services for care leavers in Sunderland have been praised by Ofsted following a monitoring visit.

Visiting the local authority for the first time since children's services were rated "inadequate" in July 2015, Ofsted inspectors, who were specifically assessing progress relating to care leaver services, said that senior managers within children's services had "responded determinedly to the areas of improvement identified".

"Senior managers have a sound understanding of the key priorities for improvement in services for care leavers, demonstrated through a clear, evaluative and accurate self-assessment," a letter to Sunderland's director of children's services, Alex Hopkins, states.

Inspectors said that workers within all levels of the local authority's service for care leavers report feeling more confident and supported by senior managers, and there is a more "open and receptive" culture of leadership.
