Ofsted praises SEN reform progress in Plymouth

Work to implement reforms to improve support for children with special educational needs in Plymouth have been praised, although improvements in a number of key areas have been called for.

An inspection of provision in October by Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission found there is been a clear commitment from senior leaders to implement government reforms and ensure that children and young people who have special educational needs or disabilities are safe.

At strategic level, the area's co-commissioning, co-location, and pooled budget arrangements were found to be contributing to a close working integrated multi-agency approach, particularly around the needs of young children and their families and for foster care and residential placements for children and young people.

Meanwhile, the local area team was found to be successfully building its capacity and has increased the effectiveness of school special educational needs co-ordinators.
