Ofsted praises scheme that places trainees in tough schools

A training scheme that places trainee teachers in difficult schools has received a glowing report from education watchdog Ofsted.

The inspectorate said the Teach First programme was successful in recruiting graduates who would otherwise not have considered a career in teaching.

It also found that the trainees benefited from the experience of working in challenging schools, and the schools gained from having enthusiastic staff.

Teach First is based in London, and placed 210 trainees in 70 schools between July 2006 and July 2007, when the inspection was carried out.

Would be teachers spend two years on the course, gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) during their first year.

The trainees generally achieved higher grades in their QTS than colleagues on conventional teaching training courses. However around half left the profession after the two year stint.
