Ofsted lauds improvements at Hassockfield

Ofsted inspectors have praised Hassockfield Secure Training Centre six months on from a critical report that branded the Serco-run centre as inadequate.

Following an unannounced inspection in December, inspectors have judged the County Durham-based centre, which can house 58 young people, to be good overall.

They praised improvements made since the last visit in which the centre was downgraded to inadequate following the escape of a 16-year-old on remand and a failure to follow emergency procedure.

In their latest report inspectors said: "The senior management team had put in place a clear improvement plan to address the issues raised in the previous inspection and continue to develop all aspects of the centre’s work."

They added: "Emergency response plans, now called contingency plans, have been fully revised. All staff have been retrained in security matters. The competency of staff has been tested in implementation of these plans and they fully understand their role and responsibilities in this respect. This action helps to ensure that everyone at the centre is kept safe."
