Ofsted inspection guidance gets overhaul

Ofsted has overhauled its inspection guidance for childcare providers following concerns that it was too confusing.

The government’s recent Focus on Enforcement review flagged up a raft of concerns from providers that the guidance was too long, overly complicated and difficult to understand.

Changes now in place include cutting back on Ofsted’s online childcare guidance by a quarter. The new guidance also clarifies that providers only need to read two key documents, Guide to Registration on the Early Years Register and Preparing for Your Registration Visit. These two documents have also been shortened from 93 pages to 33 in total.

Prior to this clarification the review found many providers believed they had to read through all Ofsted guidance for the sector, amounting to around 1,100 pages.

The guidance also has a greater focus on how providers can prepare for their inspection and raise concerns with inspectors.
