Ofsted identifies ways to improve safeguarding

Key lessons on how local authorities can improve safeguarding have emerged from the first round of unannounced inspections, a senior Ofsted figure has revealed.

John Goldup, development director for social care at the organisation, said learning from inspections is "not easy" as the checks used to assess authorities are not designed for research use.

But speaking at the Children & Young People Now conference Identify Risk Early On & Keep Children Safe, Goldup said themes for improving safeguarding include:

Goldup said there were common challenges and pressures faced by most local authorities but big differences in the way they are managed.

"We need to get better at drawing out lessons more effectively," he said.

"It is important to not just share information about strengths and weaknesses but to draw that information together to identify what things make that difference.
